00:00:00.050 --> 00:00:03.169
Here's some more bonus content for the Poultry Keepers podcast.
00:00:03.680 --> 00:00:11.300
I'm your host Rip Stalvey, and today we're going to be talking about helping your birds beat the heat and stay cool during the summer.
00:00:11.869 --> 00:00:15.919
That's something that every one of us who's ever kept chickens has had to deal with.
00:00:31.623 --> 00:00:37.442
When hot weather sets in, it's just uncomfortable for us, but it can really take a toll on our birds.
00:00:37.610 --> 00:00:47.180
Heat stress is real and if we don't stay ahead of it, it can cost us our birds, health, productivity, and sometimes even their lives.
00:00:48.771 --> 00:00:56.680
So today, i'll be talking about how to help your flock, beat the heat and stay healthy, safe, and going strong all summer long.
00:00:58.011 --> 00:01:00.560
Let's start with what heat stress really is.
00:01:01.460 --> 00:01:03.441
Now, chickens don't sweat like we do.
00:01:04.281 --> 00:01:10.671
They try to cool off by panting, dissipating heat through their comb and wattles and spreading their wings.
00:01:11.436 --> 00:01:24.245
But once the temperatures reach 85 to 90 degrees, especially with high humidity, we often see during the summer their bodies struggle to keep up Early signs are easy to miss.
00:01:25.176 --> 00:01:31.805
Your birds might be quieter, might be hanging back a little bit, or even going off their feed slightly.
00:01:33.305 --> 00:01:34.865
Then it gets more obvious.
00:01:35.615 --> 00:01:36.876
They hold their wings out.
00:01:37.536 --> 00:01:38.615
They start panting heavily.
00:01:39.906 --> 00:01:46.715
They don't move around much, and in the worst cases, birds collapse or even die from heat stroke.
00:01:47.525 --> 00:01:49.115
That's what we're trying to avoid.
00:01:50.676 --> 00:01:53.406
Heat doesn't just hurt birds physically.
00:01:54.036 --> 00:01:56.075
It can mess with the productivity too.
00:01:57.456 --> 00:02:04.506
Egg numbers will drop, eggshells can thin out growth, slows down fertility falls.
00:02:05.225 --> 00:02:11.876
Hatchability can even go down and even the birds that seem okay may be struggling under the surface.
00:02:13.436 --> 00:02:15.776
The very first thing to think about is water.
00:02:16.616 --> 00:02:31.466
On hot days chickens can drink twice as much as they usually do, so be sure you offer more of it and you need to make sure it's cool, clean, kept in the shade, and it's easy for them to access.
00:02:33.295 --> 00:02:37.735
Don't just put out one waterer and hope it lasts, add extras.
00:02:38.695 --> 00:02:42.866
Placing them in a shady spot, refill them more often.
00:02:43.675 --> 00:02:49.825
You can even freeze small plastic bottles of water and drop them into the water to help keep the water there.
00:02:49.825 --> 00:02:50.126
Cool.
00:02:51.985 --> 00:02:55.256
Low sodium poultry, electrolytes are a huge help.
00:02:55.945 --> 00:02:59.545
They replace what birds lose through panting and help with hydration.
00:03:00.656 --> 00:03:11.515
Now, you don't need to use them every day, but on those high heat index days, offer a fresh batch with electrolytes in the morning and check that water a couple of times a day.
00:03:12.550 --> 00:03:19.931
Now if you wanna make your own electrolytes, there's a recipe in the Poultry Keepers podcast, Facebook group's file section.
00:03:20.211 --> 00:03:23.271
If your birds don't have shade, they need it.
00:03:24.111 --> 00:03:28.342
It can bring temps down by 10 to 15 degrees almost instantly.
00:03:29.961 --> 00:03:34.461
Natural shade from trees is great, but if you don't have that, get creative.
00:03:35.796 --> 00:03:37.597
Put a tarp over part of the run.
00:03:38.137 --> 00:03:42.336
Use a popup canopy, use an old sheet or shade cloth.
00:03:42.907 --> 00:03:47.766
You want to create several shaded areas that move with the sun throughout the day.
00:03:49.026 --> 00:03:55.896
You can even plant tall crops like corn or sunflowers along the edge of your run to create what I like to call living shade.
00:03:56.796 --> 00:04:00.847
Birds love poking around beneath those leaves and it cools the ground beneath them.
00:04:02.151 --> 00:04:12.412
Now inside the coop, light colored roofing ventilation gaps near the ceiling, maybe even reflective insulation under the roof deck.
00:04:13.072 --> 00:04:16.612
All of these help the coop keep from turning into an oven.
00:04:18.382 --> 00:04:21.201
You don't want dead airspace inside a hot coop.
00:04:21.802 --> 00:04:28.992
A box fan, oscillating fan, or even a solar powered unit can keep the air moving and help your birds cool down.
00:04:30.641 --> 00:04:36.312
Mount the fan up high and aim it across the roost area or down low where the birds gather.
00:04:37.302 --> 00:04:41.622
Always use safe electrical cords and don't leave exposed wires or plugs.
00:04:42.732 --> 00:04:43.482
Here's a tip.
00:04:44.262 --> 00:04:49.812
Try suspending a frozen jug of water from the ceiling and let your fan blow across it.
00:04:50.201 --> 00:04:52.302
It'll cool the air like a mini swamp cooler.
00:04:53.081 --> 00:04:55.182
It's low tech, but it's effective.
00:04:57.312 --> 00:05:09.357
If your coop has windows on both sides, open them up for a cross ventilation, and make sure you've got strong wire like hardware, cloth, not flimsy screen wire to keep the predators out.
00:05:09.867 --> 00:05:13.406
You want your birds safe, cool, and secure.
00:05:15.117 --> 00:05:19.076
Now if you're off grid, solar fans are a great option these days.
00:05:19.586 --> 00:05:26.786
Look for one with a battery backup or a USB charging port so it can run even when the sun dips low.
00:05:29.036 --> 00:05:33.177
Now, let's talk about something folks often overlook and that's feeding.
00:05:34.576 --> 00:05:40.007
Digestion creates heat, so feeding birds in the hottest part of the day makes them even hotter.
00:05:41.252 --> 00:05:44.432
Instead, offer feed late in the evening.
00:05:45.062 --> 00:05:51.242
That gives him energy during the cooler hours and lets him process it before the real heat starts to set in.
00:05:52.831 --> 00:05:57.062
Skip those high carb snacks, like scratch grains and cracked corn during peak heat.
00:05:57.961 --> 00:06:04.271
Instead, go with something like hydrating fruits, like watermelon, cucumbers, or even cold leafy greens.
00:06:05.666 --> 00:06:11.036
Some folks I those freeze veggies into ice cube trays and offer those as an enrichment treat.
00:06:12.836 --> 00:06:21.326
Also, consider increasing the protein levels slightly when the temperatures spike because your birds are naturally going to eat less when the temperatures are high.
00:06:23.156 --> 00:06:29.937
Birds get cranky in the heat just like we do, and that stress can cause squabbles or pecking order issues.
00:06:29.966 --> 00:06:31.406
So keep an eye out for that.
00:06:32.637 --> 00:06:38.247
Make sure there's enough space, multiple shaded areas and more than one water source.
00:06:38.547 --> 00:06:41.067
So dominant birds don't block the shy ones.
00:06:42.567 --> 00:06:50.456
Give birds frozen treats for fun and function, try frozen peas, cubes of yogurt or frozen fruit wedges.
00:06:51.536 --> 00:06:54.567
You can also hose down one shady corner of the run.
00:06:55.346 --> 00:07:01.016
Just use a light mist, not a soaking, but you want to create a cooler dust bathing spot.
00:07:01.976 --> 00:07:07.802
A dry shady dust bath helps regulate your body temperatures and keeps feathers conditioned.
00:07:08.456 --> 00:07:12.057
It's really not a luxury, it's a need.
00:07:12.120 --> 00:07:14.411
Finally, let's think about the big picture.
00:07:15.372 --> 00:07:16.572
Plan for summer's heat.
00:07:17.531 --> 00:07:23.922
You can start now by planting shade trees, upgrading ventilation, investing in solar fans.
00:07:24.641 --> 00:07:28.362
You know the future you and your birds will thank you.
00:07:29.802 --> 00:07:31.151
If you're building a new coop.
00:07:31.512 --> 00:07:35.682
Face it away from the afternoon sun and build was airflow in mind.
00:07:37.182 --> 00:07:43.182
Think about natural ventilation, reflective roofing, and shade from day one.
00:07:44.771 --> 00:07:49.302
And don't forget to be kind to yourself because managing birds through heat is tough.
00:07:51.072 --> 00:07:57.101
Do the best you can with what you've got and know that even small changes can make a big difference.
00:07:57.500 --> 00:07:59.000
That's going to do it for today.
00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:03.170
I hope this gave you some fresh ideas and a bit of confidence going into summer.
00:08:04.161 --> 00:08:11.060
Your birds depend on you, and with the right tools and the little prep, you can help them thrive during the hottest month of the year.
00:08:11.901 --> 00:08:15.290
